A flashy green wing from a Madagascar Sunset Moth is set beneath a piece of smoky quartz. Handmade and suspended from an 18 inch sterling silver chain, this piece is sure to start conversations.
The butterfly wings used in this jewelry originate from butterfly conservatories and farms around the world. Butterflies in the wild only have about a 2% chance of surviving. However, being hand raised on farms, that survival rate jumps to about 90%. Once emerging from a chrysalis, butterflies only live a few weeks, depending on species. Many of them perish shortly after laying eggs, after which their bodies are disposed of, unless they can be sold to collectors or artists. In addition to helping the survival rate, butterfly farming fights deforestation to preserve their habitats.
